I went to Best Buy yesterday, and good things never happen when I leave my house and visit retail stores. It's the first time in months that I have gone to a retail outlet. I find most stores gross and disgusting because they are filled with the stench of capitalism (that's for you BSmith). So my wife and I are looking for a new laptop. Just the basic low-end kind that's only good for YouTube and email. We had a few scoped out and as we are comparing the two a weaselly looking guy walks over to us. He has the head that is way too small for his body, and because of this his ears poke out like their trying to escape from his unfortunate circumstance.. He's your friendly Best Buy associate and he’s walked up to the wrong dude.
As he’s standing across from us he looks at the box I'm holding and says, "You know that the laptop your holding is going to be $70 more then the price that’s listed." Of course I didn't know that and that is not the way anyone should start a conversation with me. I proceeded to ask him why. He then went into salesmen mode and started to tell me how The Geek (Douche) Squad had optimized the computer to maximize its performance and remove all the non-sense that we pre-loaded on the PC. He then states how most people could never do the things that The Douche Squad could do and if one of the guys took it home and tried to do it, it would take him 72 straight hrs to get it done and it still wouldn’t be as good as what they could do at the store. I almost walked out at that very moment. My wife asked him how he could tell that it was optimized. He showed us a sticker that was on the box that shows a check list of what has been done to that unit. My problem is that it had nothing stating on it that you would be charged for that.
I then mounted my high horse and started to tell him that he had said that to the wrong person and I didn’t want a unit that had been opened and tampered with. I wasn’t some Ill-informed consumer that needed to pay $70 extra dollars for them to take software off my PC and check some optimization items in the control panel. I then asked him if this is like where they open a 360 up and update the firmware and then sell it at a bloated price because its a “service” they provide. He tried to tell me that he didn’t know anything about that, but I could see the truth as his face turned a faint color of red and the way his eyes darted from side to side. I then told him that was glad he told me this because if I would have made it to the register and found this out I would not have been a happy man. I then walked around him and took the laptop I had and placed it back on the shelf where I had gotten it. I thanked him for letting me know that detail because he had helped me with my decision and I would not be buying a laptop today. My wife told me later that I may have been a little forceful with him and that is why she walked away and I couldn’t find her for the next 10 minutes.
When she came back she asked the salesmen if they had any others that were not opened, and because it was more for her then I she bought it. It’s a funny thing wives. They can see their husbands going to a bad place and still buy something is spite of it. As a punishment (which is more like a reward) to my local Best Buy I went to every netbook, laptop, and desktop and put all of their web browsers on theplaystationshow.com. I would encourage all good community members to do the same.
After all of this we stopped at the local Wal-Mart, which I loathe, and to my surprise they had a laptop at the same price and brand, but considerable better in performance. We bought it and went straight back to Best Buy and returned the one we’d purchased just minutes earlier. It was a strange turn of events and now you know the rest of the story.
On a side not I got to play DJ Hero and I kind of dug it. I wasn’t sure what was happening but when you made the music play it made me feel like a DJ in a weird Best Buy demo kiosk kind of way. It’s sad that game cost like 120 dollars to enjoy, but I can see the appeal now that I had a chance to try it.
