Discussion Topic for Episode 75 - What is Your Favorite FPS Series?

With the coming of Modern Warfare Two in less than ten days, and only a couple of days after the podcast is released next week, we thought we would focus on the genre that puts butts in seats for the video game industry these days. What we are looking for this week is, what is your favorite first person shooter series? Further, why do you like that series specifically, and what would you add or change about it if you could? However if you are not an FPS guy, why don’t you like the genre, and what if anything could developers put in these types of games to make you change them?

Get the answers to us by next Saturday, and your input will be on the cast. Remember also that by your posting in this thread you are entered for a chance at a $20 PSN card the week we hit fifty iTunes reviews. We are only five away, so if you are posting here, and you have not reviewed us at either iTunes or the Zune Marketplace, make that extra stop today. Hope everyone has a great week, I look forward to seeing everyone at Community Game Night this Friday.

Haze. Its the best FPS ever created.

But really.... Id go for Resistance as a Series, and Killzone 2 for just a single FPS game because i didnt play the first one.

P.S. COD:MW2 is gonna suck BIG balls!

the end. BOOM!

My personal favourite would have to be the Rainbow Six series especially the Vegas offshoots. Absoloutely loved them, Vegas 2 more so. I think they are more rewarding and more challenging than the Call of Duty series for example. I personally loved the realistic difficulty, I found it a lot harder than Veteran on COD and infact had to pull in one of my friends to help me beat the game, I blasted through Call of Duty 4 and WAW on veteran fairly easily by myself. Online is kind of its downfall but the single-player experience is superior to other well known FPS series' so I think that the online experience is what I would change, I think I would make it a little more squad oriented, a little like say more like MAG but obviously smaller scale. I'm probably alone in my view in liking Vegas 1 and 2, but for some reason they really appealed to me.

I'd have to go with Counterstrike. It was the first FPS that introduced me to "realistic" damage and deaths. The whole once you get killed, you stay dead for the round thing and how each team has to plant the bomb etc. I'm not sure if it invented it, but I know other games like some of the modes in COD have their own version that's also pretty fun. And then of course Counterstrike: Source just upped the graphics a bit, but otherwise plays relatively the same. It's one of the only online FPSs that I ever used to play until the PS3 came out.

(But yes, my PSN name is the launch code for a Nuke that targets MS's headquarters.)

I love the Call of Duty series. I love the series because the games have great controls, really good multiplayer and they're really fun. The thing I would like to change about Call of Duty is the knife. I can't even tell you how many times someone stabbed me from about 5 feet away in COD4, the knife is like a magnet.

I never liked first person until I played cod4. I saw other people playing first person games and I felt like you couldn't see anything, for me it was something I had to get used to. But when I did it's awesome. My brother played Turok on 64. I tried to play it and hated it, I was a kiddo trying to play turok so there was the error. Didn't play any first person games again until cod4. That said. Killzone 2 is the best first person game i've ever played and the funnest first person online i've ever experienced. I can't think of anything I would do to change it, but what I would change in a first person type of game is give you the option to change it to 3rd person for certain modes just like MW2 is doing. I understand it can't be in the standard online matches because that could give people more advantageous views but I appreciate that they are busting 3rd person.

Its Probably a bit run of the mill but im gonna say Call of Duty series with the Half Life series coming a close second the only reason i say Call Of Duty is because i have played more of the series and spent more time playing it in general.

I aslo like the resistance series and to Austins amazement i actually enjoyed Resistance 2 and Retribution.

Shit now i get thinking bout it i like the Killzone Series too Arrrrgghhh!!! I LOVE FPS's this weeks topic is too hard.

im not really a FPS fan... mainly because CapCom doesn't see it as a viable genre ^_^

but i have played obscene amounts of B:43 and Mirror's Edge. both DICE games i think...

with battlefield, it was the tug-of-war capture-the-base gameplay that was the hook.
and with mirror's edge, it was the puzzle-like traversal system - and when you look hard enough, there's a million different ways to get from A to B, and you can keep getting faster...

and to answer your question B; this is "what if anything could developers put in these types of games to make you change them".

i couldn't really find an interesting pic for my comment this week... so i thought i'd double dip on this one:
