Discussion Topic for Episode 67 - Your Game Industry Choice

An honest to god case of the community inspiring me to a topic idea, a show listener, whose name I will add later, asked the hosts that were in the game night if we do this for a living. The answer is of course, we are actually rich millionaires, our doctor just tells us to host a little known podcast to bring spice to our lives. OK, with my Caddy Shack paraphrase out of the way, here is the topic, if you were in the games industry, what profession would you like, being a game developer, a games journalist, or a professional game player?

Here are the rules, you will make a decent living at all three, but there are certain advantages to each. Being a developer you play your one game exclusively, but you love it, and of the three you make the most money. Being a journalist, you play all the games, anything you want, and you are the most famous. Lastly, if you are the player, you are great at whatever game you choose, and you get to live a traveling lifestyle, jet setting around the world playing in tournaments and such. Get your answers and why you chose it by next Saturday night, don’t forget the community gaming night on Thursday, and keep the flood of iTunes reviews coming, someone has to collect on the $20 PSN card. Its a tough choice but i would have to go with being a developer. I see this one as the most fulfilling as you would get to put your own ideas into games, and from playing so many games in the past and seeing what could be done differently/better then you could put all of your own ideas into a game and get a good sense of accomplishment from developing a game and pushing the boundries of an industry. Even though according to the thread i would only get to play one game, it would be enjoyable as i would be able to tweak it and change things about it to improve it. Plus according to the thread i would get payed the most so lots of money didnt hurt anyone....did it?

Great topic! I've worked in the software development world in real life so I'd have to pass on being a game developer. Working as a professional gamer sounds tempting but always jetting around and feeling the pressure to stay ahead of the kids who were after my title could certainly take the fun out of it. When I think about it as if these choices were in front of me in real life I would have to go with being a games journalist. This career would feed my desire for creative expression while giving me a "work related" reason to follow the games industry, track news stories, theorize about the console wars and play games. I'm also fascinated by the stories of the people behind the games and where their ideas come from so as long as there were games in development I'd never run out of material for articles. Yep, games journalist hands down.
